STEPHEN CASSEN
POETRY

The Monastery was a place to develop the mind, imagination and spirit.

THE SHADOWED MEN
Steve Cassen

We are the shadowed men
alone, yet not apart,
in dreams not dreamed,
nor schemed,
nor even reminisced.
We hold together
foundation weak,
still founded on experience.
We are the Godless men
we clothed in sainthood cloak
we battle minds with drawn-out lines
of stubborn clinging hope
some self-made clutching madness.
We fear the Hangman's rope.
We ward the daily watch.
We wear the Stranger's cape.
We shroud off Armageddon.
Expose the scalpel's blade
in limitless escape
of emptiness.
We lost in reason.
It is we, ourselves, we fear.

Stephen Cassen was a unique and multi talented person. He wrote the poetry presented here when he was in his late teens and early 20's.

What does he have to do with Medieval Monks? It's quite possible that he also shared this experience of monastic life. He had Neptune in the 9th house square to Saturn in the 12th house and Chiron on a Pisces ascendant. Steve was brilliant academically, vegetarian from a young age, intensely passionate about Philosophy both Western and Eastern. In his 20's he studied Astrology, practiced meditation for hours a day and was a spiritual disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda for some years. He loved animals.
